Installation Basics and Tips for Modern Entry Doors
Begin by making certain the door you purchase is "handed" correctly. That means the doorknob should be on the proper side. Make sure the top and bottom of the door has been painted or sealed to prevent warping after years of exposure to the elements. Most doors will already be sealed at the factory.
Most doors come from the factory with a one-eighth inch gap between the door and the door jamb. The door jamb must be installed plumb and level with the rough opening to ensure that the door will open and close properly. To do this, shims should be used. Shims are small pieces of wood that fit into tight spaces and are used to steady and square the door as you install it.
When you think the door is in its proper place, drive penny nails through the jamb and into the shims. Leave about half an inch of the nail sticking out in case you need to make further adjustments. Test the door several times to make sure it closes properly, does not rub against the frame, and leaves no gaps between the jamb and the door. Once the shim work looks perfect, drive the nails in the rest of the way.
Add the finish trim and any weatherstripping you might need. Gently clean the door with a damp cloth to remove any sawdust or residue from the installation. Tighten all hardware and you're done; your modern entry doors are ready to be used for years to come.
